Re-evaluation of the availability and future use of existing natural resources has become imperative in modern societies subsequent to global concerns for environmental protection, public health and energy conservation. Conservation of finite natural resources and utilisation of renewable resources are gaining more emphasis everyday while consumer preferences are switching to natural products such as nutraceuticals, non-synthetic additives for food and feed and plant raw materials for pharmaceuticals. Biotechnologies offer great opportunities towards this goal since the economic potential and turnover rate of biological materials are very high.
Bioengineering is the science upon which all biotechnological applications are based. It is a discipline that applies engineering principles to biological systems for the purpose of developing new technologies of services to improve the living standards of societies. It exploits the new developments in molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, cell metabolism and engineering principles and applies them in order to understand living systems and to bring solutions for various problems associated with aging populations, increasing costs of energy and food, decreasing natural resources and environmental issues.
Ege University, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Bioengineering will be hosting the 5th Congress for Bioengineering between 16-19 June, 2010, for first time as an international congress, and will address these challenges, discuss the theory as well as applications for practical innovative solutions. The Organising Committee hopes that the Congress will establish and strengthen collaborations among scientists, researchers, professionals and NGOs in the main fields of bioengineering.
